Dean had been out of work for over two years. While he had studied a trade and previously worked as a Fitter & Machinist, as well as a retail store-man, once those jobs came to an end he found it difficult to find more work in the Illawarra. Dean registered with The Salvation Army Employment Plus where he was asked to fill out not only his education and previous work experience, but his hobbies as well.

Having had a keen interest in computers for some years, Dean had a wealth of self-taught experience taking computers apart, figuring out how they worked, how to change components and diagnosing and solving problems.

Even though his prior work experience was in a completely different field, because hobbies were taken into account, his job search widened to include electronics. When a position became available at Renewable Recyclers Dean was put forward as a candidate.

Renewable Recyclers unique approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities of refurbishing and recycling used PCs means the future looks bright for Dean.

Now a Renewable Recyclers Computer Technician, Dean, spends his working days giving computers a second life. His main function is as a tester, fault finder and refurbisher, ensuring the computers made available to community groups and people on a low income are quality tested, loaded with genuine Microsoft software ready for use.

Dean is confident that working at Renewable Recyclers will mean that other employment opportunities in the computer repair field will open up for him.

Dean says there are many people in the same situation as he was, just waiting for an opportunity to show what they can do. "I know plenty of people with no formal qualifications who would jump at the chance of a job like mine".
